6 Career Lessons I Learned From My 6 Months in Sales
6 Career Lessons I Learned From My 6 Months in Sales6 Career Lessons I Learned From My 6 Months in SalesHeres the thing I hate sales.Im notlage saying that without having conducted my due diligence My first job out of college welches in the sales and renewals department of a reputable magazine. Id hoped that being near editorial- if not in the actual department- was a close second to my English majors dream-job fantasies. While I loved my colleagues and my new post-grad independence, I soon learned that a sales position just wasnt the right fit for me.I felt uncreative, stifled by numbers, and disheartened that I wasnt doing what Id dreamed of when I was in college. So when I left after seven months, no one was particularly surprised. My manager even gifted me a copy of Death of a Salesman (seriously), and I moved to my next job believing Id left sales firmly in the past. But in the two jobs Ive had since, Ive realized just how valuable the skills I learned as a salesperson have been. Her e are the six biggest lessons I learned from my brief stint in sales- lessons that are important whether or not youre selling anything at all.1. Get Over Your Fear of the PhoneWhen I first started working, I had a serious fear of the phone. And for the most part, that was OK- I could easily bypass a phone call with a well-placed text or email. When I began renewing magazine subscriptions, however, I had no such luck Phone calls were the most efficient and effective way of contacting elusive subscribers. Moreover, department leadership tracked our call volume throughout the day. I was sunk. After some anfangsbuchstabe hiccups (I once stammered through a phonetic spelling of a name, saying, It starts with F, as in... Fail), I not only got over my fear, but I realized the value of these verbal conversations. Now, rather than play a frustrating and time-costly game of email tag, I wont hesitate to pick up the phone when I need something clarified.2. Follow Up in WritingAny good sales asso ciate knows that nothing really counts unless its in writing. I learned very quickly that I needed to follow up friendly phone calls with shrewd emails recapping the meat of a conversation- or nothing would move forward.Thats served me well in subsequent positions, even when Im not intently tracking goal numbers. After a lengthy team meeting or a one-on-one conversation with a manager, its helpful to send a quick follow-up email clarifying that youre on the saatkorn page and assigning next steps. Its a simple task, but it can preclude major pitfalls that result from miscommunication.3. Embrace MetricsWhen I worked in sales, my success was wholly dependent on monthly numbers. I was obsessive about tracking my progress I knew to the decimal point what percentage of subscribers I needed to renew in order to reach my goals. The last week of the month became stressful if I hadnt yet hit my goal.At the time, I decidedly disliked this dependence. But now, without having a goal percentage t o hit or a commission to make, Ive found Im still obsessive about metrics- I even assign myself goal numbers independent of my managers requests. I learned that metrics, however frustrating, are in place for a reason. They help track what worked and what didnt, and this analysis can lead to improvements. For example, while Im no longer counting each subscriber and his or her dollar value, I am tracking every reader of my companys blog- where she comes from, what piece she reads, how long she spends on the site- and using that data to make decisions moving forward.4. Toughen UpWhen you work in sales, youll learn something quickly People are not nice all the time. No matter how respectful or polite you are, you might encounter people who are rude, curmudgeonly, or just plain mean. But youll learn to get over it. Once I had been hung up on, yelled at, and insulted over the phone enough times, I learned to let things roll off of my back.In any job (or situation, for that matter), Ive rea lized that an outpouring of negative emotion, even if directed at me, doesnt necessarily have anything to do with me.Toughening up was a hard- albeit important- lesson to learn.5. Teamwork (Makes the Dream Work)By the end of college, I was my own best teammate when it came to schoolwork. From research papers to exam cramming, I had my own work style down pat- and I liked it.In the workplace, though, my self-motivation could only go so far. Without my talented and supportive teammates, I wouldnt have been able to tackle the volume of readers whose subscriptions I needed to renew. On a more qualitative level, they made my days way better- whether they were high-fiving me when we hit goal numbers or commiserating with me when we didnt. In sales, as in anything, you cant do it alone. And if youve got a good team of colleagues, dont forget to count your lucky stars.6. Take Off the Rosy GlassesWhen I graduated from college, I knew that I would be lucky to find a job- any job- in a particul arly depressing job market. Still, I nursed a hope that I would somehow stumble into a position that was perfect for me one that allowed me to be creative, to write constantly, and, of course, to avoid the dreaded phone. This didnt happen right away, and Im glad. Most people dont just fall into a perfect-fit profession- getting there takes a lot of work and a little trial and error. And not loving my first job helped me analyze the pros and cons of the position and assess what I really wanted in my future opportunities. In the two years and change since I left my sales job, Ive been surprised to see how often I recall those transferable skills in my daily work. Im pleased to see the sales(wo)man in me, long thought dead, resurrect herself from time to time and remind me of the lessons that, looking back, I would never trade.Photo of salesperson courtesy of Shutterstock.

Publishing House Editor Jobs
Publishing House Editor JobsPublishing House Editor JobsIf youre looking for a job in book publishing, or if youre an author who would like to know mora about the roles of the various editors, here are the most typical editorial jobs within a publishing house. The Publishers Job In its most idealized form, the job of a book publisher is to be both the editorial visionary and the geschftsleben head of a publishing house or imprint. In trade publishing, the publisher sets the broad tone for the type of books the house publishes. The rest of the editorial staff reports acquisitions up through the ranks at the eventual discretion of the publisher. The Editorial Director / Editor-in-Chiefs Job Reporting to the publisher, the editorial director of a publishing house or imprint is usually the person in charge of directing the day-to-day efforts of the editors. He might also have his own list of books to edit, but it will likely be a small one, owing to the managerial responsibilitie s of his role. The Book Editors Job A book editors job is to take a book proposal from acquisition through to the finished work and beyond. While its widely assumed that the editors main duty is to line-edit the manuscript, the job, in fact, encompasses a number of different facets, all critical to the success of the finished book. It falls under the editors job to Acquire the book from a literary agent. This means reading proposals and their manuscripts or sample chapters and assessing the potential novel or sachbuch books appeal to the marketplace. It necessarily means writing a lot of rejection letters. If a book project passes her muster, the editor then acts as its advocate to a larger acquisitions committee. If the editor gets the high sign to acquire a book, he or she will then have the task of negotiating the authors contract with the agent. In much rarer instances, an editor may acquire an un-agented manuscript. Make sure the author stays on track with the manuscript. The editor works with the author to ensure the manuscript that comes in lives up to the books promises that is, type of content, quality of information, and good writing. This means the editor will check in with the author while the manuscript is being written, to assess progress. If there are warning signs that the manuscript will be late, the editor keeps the managing editorial department- and her bosses- apprised of the schedule.Edit the manuscript.Between the time a book manuscript is due and the time it goes into production, there a number of editorial stagesthrough which the manuscript needs to pass. Be an advocate for the book to the marketing department, the werbung department, and the sales department. Its part of the book editors job to ensure the marketing, publicity, and salespeople are fully apprised of the individual books value and potential in the marketplace. Depending on the house, editors may be required to write tip sheets for the sales department or catalog copy for marketing. The editor will likely work very closely with publicity to ensure that the book and authors respective potentials are fully exploited to the media. The Editorial Assistants Job Editorial assistant jobs are the entry-level editorial jobs in book publishing, and share many aspects of administrative assistant jobs in any industry. An editorial assistant traditionally desires an apprenticeships path to becoming a full-fledged editor. The editorial assistant helps the editor with the labor- and communication-intensive editorial tasks, such as reams of editorial correspondence (including sending all those rejection letters), keeping track of schedules, etc. The editorial assistant also acts as a gatekeeper for the editor, helping to manage the barrage of incoming phone calls and emails. If he is effective, efficient and proactive, the editorial assistant may be allowed to help assess the merits of incoming manuscripts and perhaps work on projects of his own, under the au spices of the editor. The Developmental Editors Job For most trade publishing houses, the development of a manuscript is handled by the acquiring editor herself. At textbook publishers, a developmental editor is sometimes engaged to work with the author to help shape the books content, ensuring that the information flows in properly, in a logical progression for a class syllabus. Other Editor Jobs Assistant editor, associate editor, editor, senior editor, executive editor are all iterations of the book editors job, with increasing levels of responsibility, often based on the success of previous projects. With each bump in title, an editor gets more freedom to acquire more expensive book projects or projects to her taste. Despite their editorial titles, the managing editor and the copy editors fall under the auspices of the production department, not the editorial department.

What to Expect from Military Basic Training
What to Expect from Military Basic TrainingWhat to Expect from Military Basic TrainingSome people go into military basic training in survival mode and have a tough time meeting the standards every day, while others embrace the training as a team player and leader among their peers. How do you do this?Prepare yourself physically, and the mind will follow.Learn how to be a good team player while in high school/college whether that is sports, band, or club activities. These are some of the valuable skills you can start learning now that will benefit you during your military journey. Not Like a Civilian Job Regardless of what your recruiter told you, being a member of the United States Armed Forces is not just like having a civilian job. In the military, there will always be someone telling you what to do, when to do it, and how to do it and youve got to do it. Sometimes theyll tell you to do something that you dont want to do, or tell you in a way that makes you angry. Failing to d o it is not an option. The willful disobeying of a lawful order wont just get you fired, as it would in a civilian occupation, it can get you sent to jail. In the military, youll work the hours you are told to work, youll work overtime with no additional pay, youll do the tasks youre assigned to do (even if they dont relate exactly with your job), youll live where youre told to live, and youll deploy where and when youre told to deploy. If youre not absolutely willing to make these sacrifices, then do yourself and the government a big favor and dont join. Realities of Boot Camp Military boot camp is like nothing youve ever experienced. However, the rigid routine and absolute control over every aspect of your life are several times worse than normal military duty, and thats by design. Its the job of the Training Instructors (T.I.s) and Drill Instructors (D.I.s) to either adjust your attitude to a military way of thinking (self-discipline, sacrifice, loyalty, obedience)or to drum you out before the military spends too much money on your training. They do this by applying significant degrees of physical and mental stress, while at the same time teaching you the fundamentals of military rules and the policies, etiquette, and customs of your particular military service. The training programs are scientifically and psychologically designed to disassemble the civilian and build from scratch a proud, physically fit, and dedicated member of the military. Results of Boot Camp Youll find that boot camp gets just a little bit easier each day. You may also find in the future that your military service was a major part of developing who you are, no matter the length of service. While it will help to get into shape and prepare yourself mentally before enlisting, you still may not be fully braced for all the military will throw at you during boot camp. How well you absprache with unexpected challenges is just one more way the armed services separate the soldiers, sail ors, airmen and Marines from those who arent suited to serve.

New graduates struggling to land jobs
New graduates struggling to land jobs New graduates struggling to land jobsPosted October 13, 2011, by Mike KermodeStudy, graduate, get a good job. You could be forgiven for thinking that this is how your career will gloriously begin. But you could well be wrong.A new report from Graduate Careers Australia shows that the availability of jobs for tertiary education graduates fell in 2010 for the second year in a row.The report demonstrates that around 25 per cent of bachelor degree graduates had not found full-time employment within four months of completion of their studies the highest figure since 1994.The study also reveals that women were likelier than men to have entered a full-time job after uni, with employment rates of 76.8 per cent and 75.4 per cent respectively, and that men were more likely not to be working while looking for a full-time lage.Accounting and science graduates are also among the worst off when it comes to finding a job quickly after completing their studies. GCA research manager Bruce Guthrie said that job availability for new graduates had at first been affected by the international Financial Crisis, but continuing economic uncertainty has seen employers stay conservative when it comes to anticipating staffing levels and hiring. This has made for a very competitive graduate job market. But according to Mr Guthrie, graduates might be about to receive a break. We are now into the recruitment season for final year students and it seems that activity might be up a little this year, which suggests that graduate employment figures could show an improvement, he said. While graduates may face a less competitive environment to come, the research is a clear sign that today, a university degree alone wont necessarily get you the job youre after. If youre a final year student, or a recent graduate, there are a couple of things you can do to maximise your chances of landing your dream job after completing your studies. The first is to get yourself some work experience or an internship. Work experience is invaluable to prospective employees, and very, very attractive to prospective employers. It shows that youll hit the ground running, and that you have the initiative and gusto to start learning the ropes early. This has been shown in the UK, where a January study conducted by graduate recruitment market research company High Fliers found that more than thirty per cent of 2011 UK graduate vacancies are filled by applicants who have already worked for the hiring organisation during their degree. Just as important is to make sure you have a top-notch resume and cover letter. Since you dont have years of experience to get you through the door, having a polished, professional resume will help enormously in grabbing the attention of recruiters. Remember, you cant afford to have a recruiter take one glance at your resume and move on. Do whatever it takes to transform your resume and cover letter into professional, form idable documents. Career FAQs offers a professional Resume Writing Service to help you achieve this, so you can land your first career-launching gig. Take these steps, and youll be putting yourself in the best position possible to graduate and land the job you want.
